I'm a fresher software engineer with 8 months of experience working at a fintech company. My tech stack is .NET, Spring Boot, React, SQL Server, and I'm mostly building internal portals and banking-related EFT switch features.
I've been thinking about how the software engineering/development is evolving with AI development.
A lot of the work I currently do is CRUD-heavy. With tools like Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, etc., AI can already generate a large portion of this code. It feels like the simply being able to write CRUD applications is not that valuable in current tech world.
I know I should learn System Design because that's becoming more important as experience grows. I also asked Claude this question, and it suggested learning Agentic AI, building AI agents, orchestrating workflows, integrating tools, using MCP, RAG, and treating AI as another software component rather than becoming an AI developer.
The problem is that I don't think switching completely into AI/ML engineering is realistic for me in the next 1–2 years. I don't have a strong AI research background, and that field is evolving so quickly that I'm not sure it's the best investment if my goal is to switch to a better software engineering role.
So my question is:
If you were an early-career software engineer today, what would you focus on over the next 1–2 years to stay valuable in the job market?
what would you suggest me to learn now in next 1-2 years to keep up. I am confused now so any guidance will be fine for taking the next decisions.
