Opening an external hyperlink in a Current browser session

Admittedly this is a (probably) a very far-fetched, even dumb, question; because the feature I am thinking of would probably be rife with abuse if it existed. If I am on a website URL -- let's say www.example.com/contact. If I then get a link in another tab, another window, maybe even another app (like an email Client), with a link to www.example.com/about, the expected behavior would be that the link would open in a NEW tab in my preferred browser; so now the user has my website open in 2 different tabs. My question is if there is any way to have that link open in the browser tab I already have open to www.example.com/contact? (In this example, I built the website www.example.com, and sent the user the link to the other page. No funny business.)

Thanks for your thoughtful responses.
