I want to create a pattern where a bunch of small, oddly shaped segments are butted up against each other to look like a rope. each segment of the rope would need to overlap to get the spacing to look right, but of course that means that parts of the artwork are getting clipped since each segment has it's own box. I can't figure this one out, and maybe it's impossible but I want to exhaust all options.

the reason I want this to be a pattern element is to allow it to be dynamic in width, taking up 100% of it's parent element, like a border.
