TortoiseGit not appearing in Windows 11 default context menu and custom menu entries ignored
07:31 01 Mar 2026

I am experiencing an issue with TortoiseGit on Windows 11 since updating to version 2.18.0 (also present in 2.18.1).

Previously, TortoiseGit appeared directly in the compact Windows 11 context menu (right-click menu in Explorer).

Since updating:

  • TortoiseGit no longer appears in the default (compact) Windows 11 context menu.

  • I have to click "Show more options" to access TortoiseGit.

  • The entries shown there are only the default ones.

  • Custom entries configured in TortoiseGit → Settings → Context Menu (e.g., "Rename") never appear.

  • Changes in the context menu settings seem to have no effect.

What I already tried

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled TortoiseGit multiple times.

  • Downgraded to version 2.17.

  • Restarted Windows Explorer and rebooted the system.

The behavior remains the same.

Environment

  • TortoiseGit: 2.18.0 / 2.18.1

  • OS: Windows 11
