Is it an alternative to style XHTML documents with XSLT instead of CSS?

From what I understand an XSLT can transform an XHTML document to another one.

Also, XHML documents can have inline styles through the style attribute.

Theoretically it is possible to do with XSLT to do at least partially what CSS does by injecting the style attribute content to the elements we are interested.

Has this been used before?

What are the pros and cons of this approach and why it is not used.
