I’m experiencing an issue with the Google Maps Flutter Navigation SDK on Android.
I want my map to always stay in light mode, regardless of the device’s system theme.
My app is forced to light mode using ThemeMode.light, but the map still switches to dark mode when the device is in dark theme.
So even though the entire app stays light, the map continues following the system theme, which is not the behavior I want.
I also tried applying a custom map style using a JSON file.
However, the Google Map Style Tool ( https://mapstyle.withgoogle.com/ ) does not provide any JSON for the default light theme. When I select the "standard / normal" light theme, it returns an empty JSON: [], so I cannot apply a custom style to force light mode.
What I’ve tried
Setting the app theme explicitly to
ThemeMode.lightProviding an empty style JSON (
[])Attempting to override dark mode through map options
Testing on different devices and emulators
None of these prevent the map from switching to dark mode when the device system theme is dark.
Expected behavior
The map should always stay in light mode, independent of Android system dark mode.
Actual behavior
On Android, the map automatically switches to dark mode when the device theme is dark—even though the app is locked to light mode.
Question
How can I force Google Maps (Flutter Navigation SDK or Google Maps SDK under the hood) to always use light mode, ignoring the Android system theme?
If the light theme JSON is required:
Is there any way to obtain a proper light mode style JSON since the Google Map Style Tool returns only [] for the standard theme?
