I need to generate a monthly cost breakdown for each Virtual Machine protected in an Azure Recovery Services Vault (RSV), starting from January 2025, in a given subscription.

Azure Cost Analysis shows total backup spend under Microsoft.RecoveryServices and the number of protected items (e.g., ~210 VMs), but there is no direct per-VM cost view available in the portal.

I've tried: PowerShell + Cost Management Query, Cost Management Exports (CSV), Power BI Azure Cost Management connector, Filtering ServiceName = “Backup”

But backup-related billing line items often include storage and protected instance charges that don’t clearly map 1:1 to VM names.

In some cases, InstanceName is recorded in cryptic format like:

VM;iaasvmcontainerv2;_;;

I can extract the VM name by splitting this string — but I want to confirm whether this is the correct and reliable method.

• Is there a recommended or official method to map Backup RSV costs to individual VMs using Azure Cost Management data?

• Can this be done fully inside Power BI using the Cost Management connector?

• Are there specific fields/tables in the Usage Details dataset that reliably identify VM-specific backup billing?
