I have nostalgia for the mid 90s when I first started learning c++. I would like to revisit some of my old college laboratory exercises from back then. In 1995 we used a c++ compiler on a VAX machine.

What I would like to do:

Code up those old c++ lab exercises with a compiler just like we had in 1995... but... ideally using the modern day syntax highlighting, code completion and debugging available today via vscode.

I figured I could install Borland C++ or MS Visual c++ either in dosbox or in a win 95 vm. But is there an easier way to do this and get the same compiler attributes I had back in 1995? Can I get an old gcc, maybe v 2.7.0 and get that running and connect vscode to it so I could have some of the modern day editing and debugging tools but with a 1995 standard compiler?
