Privacy Policy
Thank you for choosing ByteChat ("the App", "we", "us", or "our"). We are committed to protecting your privacy and providing a secure, private messaging experience. This Privacy Policy explains what information ByteChat collects, how it is used, stored, and protected, and the choices available to you.
1. Overview
ByteChat is a serverless, peer-to-peer (P2P) messaging application designed to enable private communications between devices using local networking technologies such as Wi‑Fi Direct and local network discovery. Because ByteChat operates primarily offline and exchanges data directly between devices, we do not rely on centralized servers to store or route user messages.
2. Information We Do Not Collect
Protecting your privacy is central to our design. ByteChat does not:
- Collect or store personal identifiers such as your name, email address, phone number, or device contacts on remote servers.
- Require online registration, user accounts, or cloud authentication to use core features.
- Transmit or store your messages, media, or files on cloud servers.
- Track your location, browsing habits, or device activity for analytics or advertising.
3. Local Data Stored on Your Device
To provide a useful experience, ByteChat may store certain data locally on your device. This data is controlled by you and is not transmitted to our servers:
- Message history: Chats you choose to keep are stored on your device.
- Shared media & files: Photos, videos, and documents you receive or send are stored locally (if accepted).
- App settings: Preferences, theme selections, and local UI settings.
You can delete any local data at any time by using the app’s built-in delete/clear features or by clearing the app data from your device settings.
4. Permissions and Why We Need Them
ByteChat requests minimal permissions required for offline P2P functionality. These permissions are used only to enable features and are not used for data collection:
- Network / Wi‑Fi Access: To discover and connect to nearby devices using Wi‑Fi Direct or local network sockets.
- Storage Access: To read and write media and files you choose to send or save.
- Camera / Microphone (Optional): Only requested if you use in‑app photo, video, or voice features.
5. Security & Encryption
Security is a priority. ByteChat implements end‑to‑end encryption (E2EE) for messages and file transfers during transmission between devices. Encryption keys are generated and stored locally on each participating device. We do not have access to or retain your encryption keys, messages, or media.
While we strive to follow best‑in‑class cryptographic practices, no system can be perfectly secure. We regularly review and update our security implementations.
6. Third‑Party Services
ByteChat is intentionally built to minimize reliance on third‑party services. The app does not integrate advertising networks, third‑party analytics, or cloud storage providers for message delivery. If we ever choose to add optional integrations (for example, cloud backup or an optional online account), we will disclose these clearly and obtain your consent before enabling them.
7. Optional Features & Backups
Some optional features — such as manual cloud backup or cross‑device syncing — may involve storing encrypted data on user‑selected cloud providers. Such features will be:
- Clearly labeled as optional within the app.
- Protected by strong encryption before any data leaves your device.
- Executed only after explicit consent and configuration by you.
8. Children’s Privacy
ByteChat is not targeted at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information within ByteChat, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps to remove that information.
9. Data Retention & Deletion
Local data retention is under your control. You can delete messages, media, and app data at any time. Uninstalling the app will remove local data stored by ByteChat from your device (unless your device OS preserves app data as part of a backup — in which case review your device backup settings).
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect technical improvements, legal requirements, or new features. When we make changes, we will post the updated policy in the app and on our website, and we will update the Effective Date at the top. Continued use of ByteChat after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
11. Contact & Data Privacy Requests
